Android is both an operating system and a software platform for mobile devices such as smartphones, mobile phones, netbooks and tablet computers. It was founded by Google and is developed by the Open Handset Alliance.

Android is a free, open sourced software. As an operating system for smartphones it had a worldwide market share of 84.6 percent in the second quarter of 2014. In April 2013 Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, announced that one and a half million new Android devices were being actived per day. This is almost three times as many as in July 2011. By September 2013 more than one billion Android devices had allegedly been activated.

Nowadays the Android format is above all applied as basis technology in the engineering of mobile websites. Thus it represents an alternative to Apple formats. ArgYou measures the effectiveness of contents on the basis of Android applications just as it does those based on Apple.

It makes a lot of sense especially to measure the effectiveness of mobiles, since on the small display of a smartphone the most important contents should appear at once – else it is no good for the user.
